IVEA today welcomed Education Minister, Ruairí Quinn's announcement that, as of this September, all children transferring from primary to post primary schools will have their end of year report cards sent to their new school.
According to IVEA General Secretary, Michael Moriarty, 'this is a long overdue development that will enable second level schools to meet more effectively, and in a more timely manner, the needs of all students commencing their post primary education - especially those young people with special education needs of one kind or another'.
'This is a development that IVEA has been calling for some time', said Mr Moriarty, a development that should, in a very practical way, help schools to ensure that students entering post primary school do not begin to disengage from education before schools have a chance to get to know their needs - thus reducing the numbers leaving school early'.
In conclusion, said Mr Moriarty, 'research by the ESRI and others clearly documents the extent to which remaining at school longer improves the life chances of young people and Minister Quinn's announcement will significantly improve the live prospects of many beginning their post primary education this coming September'.
