The publication of the Education and Training Boards Bill is welcomed by IVEA as a crucial statutory framework that will provide for the establishment of 16 Education and Training Boards (ETBs) to replace the present 33 Vocational Education Committees (VECs).
General Secretary, Michael Moriarty states:
This Bill underpins the most extensive overhaul of the vocational education sector for decades. It ensures that the Education and Training Boards are structured and designed for the needs of modern Ireland. Once passed, the vocational education legislation falls and the 80 years of service by VECs will end. However the ETBs will play a pivotal and strategic leadership role in their respective catchment areas in terms of the delivery of education and other training programmes. When the current FAS training centres are transferred to ETBs under proposed SOLAS legislation, these Boards will have responsibility for a vast range of education and training programmes within their respective areas. The capacity of the ETBs to shape the Ireland of the future will indeed be significant
