IVEA General Secretary Michael Moriarty issued the following statement today:
While IVEA is relieved that the pupil-teacher ratio (PTR) in second level and DEIS schools is unchanged, we are disappointed that the PTR for the PLC Sector is increasing two points to 19:1. As a significant number of PLC students are from marginalised and disadvantaged backgrounds and do not have the same level of supports as second level students, PLC colleges are concerned about the capacity of such students to benefit from PLC programmes and the fear is that the drop-out rate will increase. Disadvantaged students who transfer from DEIS schools at second level have the same need for supports at PLC level.

In respect of the reduced allocation to VECs in 2013, IVEA has been assured that the reduction can be comprehended within the existing resources by drawing on existing cash reserves as a once-off measure.
